Why should I recycle?

bottles
  • Separating items for recycling can drastically cut down your rubbish and will benefit the environment, reducing the need for raw materials in manufacturing and slowing down the demand for new landfill sites.
  • Most of the things we use can be recycled into something new, and it couldn’t be easier to do….So why throw it all away?
  • The transformation that takes place when you recycle is quite amazing.  For example...
    • In just seven days, your paper could come back as another newspaper
    • In just six weeks, your metal can could be recycled and used as part of a fridge, a car, a plane … or simply another metal can
    • Your glass bottles could be recycled into house insulation.
    • Plastic bottles could be made into a cosy fleece jacket!
  • Making new goods out of recycled material also saves energy.  For example, recycling aluminium requires only 5% of the energy it takes to make new aluminium – and produces only 5% of the CO2 emissions.  Every can made from recycled aluminium saves enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours!
  • The UK produces more than 434 million tonnes of waste every year.  This rate of rubbish generation would fill the Albert Hall in London in less than two hours.  Most of this is dumped in landfill sites – but a lot could be recycled.  As the TV adverts say – when the possibilities are endless, why throw it all away??
