How can I recycle?
Recycling at home is really simple and it is something that can involve the whole family.
- 97% of Dorset residents have kerbside recycling collection schemes, so if you do not already have a recycling box and/or bag provided by your local council, it is worth calling them up and checking that you haven’t been missed out! If you would like extra boxes/bags, these are usually available either free or for a small charge. Again, call your local council to find out or click here.
- Find out what your council recycles. Different councils collect different materials although most collect cans, glass and paper. Go to www.dorsetforyou.com/recycling to see what your council collects.
- Now that you know what items you can recycle, find a handy place to store them, such as your garage, or by your back door. Make sure you encourage everyone in your house to think whether items can be reused or recycled before they are thrown away.
- It’s a good idea to make a note on your calendar or fridge reminding you what days/dates your recycling is collected. In many circumstances, you can check your collection day by visiting here and clicking onto your relevant council.
- You can also take your recyclables to your local recycling centre. There are over 300 local recycling centres across the county at places such as village halls, public car parks and supermarkets. Click on here to find your nearest recycling bank.
- Use the Household Recycling Centres. There are 11 of these across Dorset which collect a wide variety of materials for reuse and recycling: including wood, batteries, garden waste, cardboard, metal, plastic bottles, fridges & freezers, electrical items, oil, fluorescent tubes, paint, glass bottles and paper. Details of all the HRCs are on here. Last year, 70% of all the waste taken to the Household Recycling Centres was recycled, reused or composted.
- Composting is Nature's way of recycling and helps to reduce the amount of waste we put out for the bin men. By composting kitchen and garden waste you can easily improve the quality of your soil and be well on your way to a more beautiful garden.
